Spin & Match Review

by Cheryl Simon
I have worked with a group of therapists from a large urban school district in my area for about 5 years now; it includes 85 Speech/Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, and Physical Therapists. At various events throughout the year, I display our recommended books and items for Speech Therapy, plus craft/activity books and card sets (for the PTs and OTs).
I wanted to share with you what the big seller was at one of the recent events - the Spin and Match books! Everyone loved them! As providers (as they like to be called) approached my table, as soon as I saw them looking at the sample book I would ask them if they had seen the Spin and Match books before (I knew everyone would say "no") Then I did a quick demo of how the book works.
If you are not familiar with Spin and Match, in a nutshell:
Each book includes 3 classic stories. The student reads 3 pages and answers multiple choice questions about what they just read. They answer the questions by turning the colored spinners that are built into the back cover of the book. To check their answers, they simply turn the page to see if the colors match up. There are three titles available, at $10.99 each or all three for $19.99.
Many of the speech therapists ordered the title I had on display; several ordered all three! I had SLPs tell me that this is "just what they need" because it is difficult for the children with speech problems to get to the point of comprehending what they read. They also loved the fact that the story is broken down to only 1 or 2 simple sentences per page, so it is not overwhelming.
Another point brought up today about the Spin and Match books that I had not thought of - the books teach test-taking skills. All students have to take state tests at some point, and most are multiple choice tests. The providers really liked the fact that using Spin and Match could help reinforce testing skills for their special needs students.
With all our fabulous titles, I sometimes forget about the cool "extras" - Spin and Match and the Learning Palette (also a big hit with Speech Therapists). They are unique products that you should take the time to get to know!
